Today we learnt of the death of friend of The Hub – Mayor of Wolverhampton, Cllr Elias Mattu.
We are all deeply saddened to hear of Elias’ passing after a long illness and would like to send our condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues at City of Wolverhampton Council.
Elias was a huge supporter of our Community Association and The Hub at Ashmore Park – it was his vision to create Community Hubs across Wolverhampton and he worked closely with us as we planned our move from the old Community Centre to The Hub.
He attended many meetings, listened to our ideas…and our moans and groans! When the project budget fell short and we asked for money from the council, Elias went back to the cabinet and convinced them to find the extra funds.
When we officially opened the building in September 2014 there was only one person we had in mind to do the honours – Elias and his wife Asha joined us on what will always be a very memorable day.
Over the past 3 years, Elias continued to be supportive and generous with his time – last summer, when paying tribute to Steph Clarke, another of our friends who we lost too soon, Elias was our guest as Mayor at the #stuff4steph fun day and despite not being in great health he spent several hours at the event chatting with volunteers, whom he later invited to the Mayor’s Parlour.
In September 2017 when we were awarded the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, Elias joined us once again and spoke about his joy at being able to be a part of our celebrations.
Elias once told me that he wanted community hubs to be his legacy, something he left for Wolverhampton – it’s tragic that this day has come so soon, but we will always remember his kindness, his determination and his smile.
